Why is quitting cigarette smoking so hard?A few cigarette smokers with incredibly strong will power and determination have been able to quit cold Turkey, but most ex-smokers will tell you, quitting cigarettes was the hardest thing they've ever done in their life, for some it's even harder than learning how to fly. But for smokers who have successfully quit, it's one of the best decisions they have ever made. For the addicted smoker, smoking has become a way of life. Lighting up and smoking a cigarette becomes so automatic that many smokers are in fact completely unaware they're smoking. This can be extremely dangerous when working around flammable vapors such as gassing up your car. A smoker like any other addict must maintain a delicate balance between too little and too much nicotine. Too little and the smoker begins experiencing nicotine withdrawal symptoms, too much and the smoker gets sick, since afterall, nicotine is a poison. Ever notice how a smoker will experience the sudden urge to reach for the pack of cigarettes and light up? For chain smokers, this might be a matter of a few minutes between cigarettes, but for most smokers it's usually anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour. Quitting takes focus and self-discipline, and understanding how addiction works. First you must learn to recognize what triggers the urge to smoke and work to avoid them.
